Unlike those who wore the diamond before her, Lisa didn’t want it in a ring or as the centerpiece of a clasp on a pearl necklace. She wanted a simple pendant, something that would showcase the clarity and perfection of the cut. Miriam worked with Lisa to perfect the design, taking into account her tastes and preferences. The finished piece has a hammered bezel in bright yellow gold, keeping with Lisa’s love of jewelry from India and the Middle East.

For the clasp, Miriam designed a small drop opal – Lisa’s birthstone – and a round gold tag with a roman numeral IV, a reminder that Lisa is the fourth person in her family to wear the diamond. “The clasp means so much to me,” said Lisa, “it honors my family’s lineage, and reminds me that I’m just keeping it safe for the next generation.”

Caring for an heirloom diamond

Diamonds may be the hardest substance on earth, but they can still be damaged. Keep your prized possession safe by storing it separate from other diamonds. Even that small pavé stone can scratch your larger, more precious piece. Instead of throwing all your jewelry together in one bag, separate larger stones when storing them or traveling.
